Ziehm Imaging is further consolidating its position as the leading provider of mobile C-arms equipped with flat-panel technology. With C-arm sales totaling 118 thus far for 2010, the company’s revenue is up almost one-third on last year. Ziehm Imaging mobile C-arm highlights include outstanding image quality, large C-arm openings and high-resolution x-rays with over 16,000 shades of gray.

In 2005, Ziehm Imaging was the first company to launch C-arms with flat-panel detectors. The Nuremberg company invests around fifteen percent of revenue in research and development and has been a pioneer in the fields of fully digital mobile C-arms with flat-panel technology for many years now. Today, the company is a global player, with exports accounting for 60 percent of revenue. Around 80 percent of the company’s products have been launched within the past three years. Furthermore, Germany’s Federal Armed Forces is equipping its operating centers in field hospitals, hospitals and on navy warships worldwide with Ziehm Imaging products and recently placed a major order worth tens of millions of Euros.

“With over 270 digital C-arm installations worldwide, it is clear that mobile flat-panel technology has established itself in the clinical environment,” explains Martin Herzmann, Director Global Marketing at Ziehm Imaging. “We have sold over 118 of our high-end C-arms between January and October of this year alone, underscoring once again our position as innovation and market leader,” continues Herzmann.

Flat-panel C-arms can produce images with over 16,000 shades of gray – four times higher than conventional image intensifiers. The images are also in a square format, which significantly extends the visible area and enables x-rays from Ziehm Imaging to deliver up to 60 percent more information. The flat-panel detector is compact and saves space, giving the C-arm an unparalleled opening of almost 90 centimeters. This makes it easier for surgeons to work with the fluoroscopic equipment during surgical procedures. It also provides greater access to patients, which helps raise clinical success rates. By simplifying patient positioning, the larger opening also makes life easier for OR staff.

The intraoperative use of mobile flat-panel technology has taken cardiac and vascular surgery in particular to new heights and raised the bar for quality in clinical environments. Operations that previously relied on stationary systems can now be carried out with mobile flat-panel technology. This reduces installation costs for hospitals and clinics, also combining the mobility benefits of C-arm technology with maximum image quality.

Additional highlights of the ASA Meeting include a late-breaking randomized controlled trial on the impact of Masimo noninvasive and continuous hemoglobin (SpHb®) on blood transfusions during surgery, multiple other new clinical studies, and an educational symposium on the clinical implications of Masimo’s breakthrough noninvasive monitoring technologies.

Redefining “Radical” with the 2011 Radical-7

When it was introduced in 2000, the Radical offered a new way to think about pulse oximetry with breakthrough measure-through motion and low perfusion capabilities and features such as SatShare™ and detachable handheld with rotational display. In 2005, the Radical-7 offered a new way of looking at patient monitoring with breakthrough rainbow® noninvasive measurement capabilities and a color display screen. Today, the 2011 Radical-7 redefines “radical” once again with more first-ever capabilities featured this week at the ASA, such as:

* rainbow®Acoustic Monitoring for accurate, easy-to-use, and patient-tolerant respiration rate
* Adaptive Threshold Alarms™ for audible notification only when significant changes in physiology have occurred
* Touch screen display for easy operation
* On-the-fly configuration of parameter size and waveforms
* MyView™ for personalized displays through presence detection
* Integrated wireless 802.11 and Bluetooth for seamless connectivity

About Masimo
Masimo (NASDAQ: MASI) is the global leader in innovative noninvasive monitoring technologies that significantly improve patient care-helping solve “unsolvable” problems. In 1995, the company debuted Measure-Through Motion and Low Perfusion pulse oximetry, known as Masimo SET®, which virtually eliminated false alarms and increased pulse oximetry’s ability to detect life-threatening events. More than 100 independent and objective studies demonstrate Masimo SET provides the most reliable SpO2 and pulse rate measurements even under the most challenging clinical conditions, including patient motion and low peripheral perfusion. In 2005, Masimo introduced rainbow® SET Pulse CO-Oximetry™ technology, allowing noninvasive and continuous monitoring of blood constituents that previously required invasive procedures, including total hemoglobin (SpHb®), oxygen content (SpOC™), carboxyhemoglobin (SpCO®), methemoglobin (SpMet®), and Pleth Variability Index (PVI®), in addition to SpO2, pulse rate, and perfusion index (PI). In 2008, Masimo introduced Patient SafetyNet™, a remote monitoring and wireless clinician notification system designed to help hospitals avoid preventable deaths and injuries associated with failure to rescue events. In 2009, Masimo introduced rainbow Acoustic Monitoring™, the first-ever noninvasive and continuous monitoring of acoustic respiration rate (RRa™). Masimo’s rainbow SET technology platform offers a breakthrough in patient safety by helping clinicians detect life-threatening conditions and helping guide treatment options. In 2010, Masimo acquired SEDLine®, a pioneer in the development of innovative brain function monitoring technology and devices. Masimo SET and Masimo rainbow SET technologies can be also found in over 100 multiparameter patient monitors from over 50 medical device manufacturers around the world. Founded in 1989, Masimo has the mission of “Improving Patient Outcomes and Reducing Cost of Care by Taking Noninvasive Monitoring to New Sites and Applications®.” Additional information about Masimo and its products may be found at www.masimo.com.

Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) today introduced the IntelliVue MX800 patient monitoring system, a new dimension in patient care that provides immediate access to comprehensive patient information directly at the monitor. In addition to displaying and recording traditional data such as patient vital signs, the IntelliVue MX800 offers direct access to patient information from almost any system on a hospital’s IT infrastructure. The MX800 also enables applications to run natively on the embedded informatics platform while keeping the real time patient monitoring separate and protected. This allows clinicians to easily view patient data from sources such as electronic medical records (EMRs), imaging studies and other clinical applications, helping to save caregivers’ time and aid in clinical decision making at the point of care.

Designed to facilitate more effective care delivery, the Philips IntelliVue MX800 delivers advanced clinical decision support and workflow applications. With access to a wider range of clinical information, the system presents clinicians with meaningful point of care information that may enable the earliest possible medical intervention. Access to this critical information is essential as healthcare facilities seek new and efficient ways to keep closer track of patients’ status and better manage their care, whether in critical care settings or as patients are stepped down to general wards.

“The advanced clinical informatics tools on the MX800 provide clinicians with the actionable point of care information they need to make confident decisions,” said Deborah DiSanzo, executive vice president and general manager, Patient Care and Clinical Informatics, for Philips Healthcare. “This leap in the evolution of patient monitoring, helps Philips deliver on its promise to give clinicians access to all of the relevant clinical information they need in one place, simplify clinician workflow and improve financial outcomes for the benefit of healthcare organizations and the healthcare system as a whole.”

The IntelliVue MX800 is embedded with Philips’ industry-standard informatics platform to deliver more valuable information without making any significant changes to the existing hospital environment. For the clinician, it is based on the familiar, easy to use IntelliVue user interface and applications, and its wide touch screen designed with smooth surfaces and a minimum number of seams, making it easy to clean and reducing the risk of cross-contamination. For hospital IT departments, in addition to offering Philips own clinical decision support applications, the system is interoperable with multiple vendors’ IT applications and can interface with a hospital’s existing IT infrastructure allowing information relevant to clinical decision making to be viewed and acted upon earlier. This means that hospital IT retains full control of its network with no compromise to patient vital signs, monitoring or clinical alerts.

“As the global leader in patient monitoring, Philips is committed to continued innovation and the MX800 is an example of delivering a new concept in patient care to the market that addresses the real needs of our global customers and helps them to deliver the very best of care,” said DiSanzo.

LipiScan IVUS is the first cardiac catheter to combine intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to help cardiologists identify and characterize the plaques that complicate stenting and are associated with acute coronary events. The NIR spectroscopy identifies the chemical content of the plaques; the IVUS provides an image of plaque structure and stent features. The Company expects to conduct a broad commercial launch of the system within the U.S. by year-end 2010, and anticipates regulatory approval and launch in Europe during 2011.

InfraReDx’s first-generation LipiScan NIR system is already in use at approximately 25 cardiac centers in the U.S. and is the only FDA-cleared device for the detection of lipid core coronary plaques (LCP). LCP is a fatty coronary artery plaque known to complicate stenting and suspected to cause most heart attacks following stenting. The addition of IVUS imaging enhances the value of LipiScan by providing visualization of the coronary artery lumen, assessment of the structural features of coronary plaque, and identification of proper stent sizing and expansion. The LipiScan IVUS system’s innovative design provides physicians with a grayscale IVUS image of the coronary artery along with a complete and co-registered chemogram a map of LCP within the imaged vessel.

Carefully designed to meet the workflow demands of today?s busy interventional catheterization labs, the LipiScan IVUS system is able to generate and display the combined chemogram/IVUS analysis immediately upon completion of the single catheter pullback. The LipiScan IVUS system provides physicians with an unparalleled ?one-stop? visual determination of critical coronary features that will assist in care of coronary patients, including identification of lipid-core plaques, degree of stenosis, reference vessel diameter, plaque burden and stent expansion and apposition.

“We are pleased to have achieved the important milestone of FDA marketing clearance for LipiScan IVUS, our multi-modality, single-catheter device that provides improved characterization of coronary plaques,” said James E. Muller, M.D., founder and chief executive officer at InfraReDx. “Interventional cardiologists adopting the LipiScan IVUS system will be able to quickly and accurately identify the presence and structural features of lipid-core plaques in the coronary arteries. Such knowledge will assist them in the conduct of the stenting procedure and provide information useful in the treatment of patients post-stenting. We look forward to making LipiScan IVUS available to cardiac catheterization laboratories in the United States within the next six months, and throughout the world in the following years.”

James Goldstein, M.D., director of Cardiac Research and Education for the William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, stated, “The LipiScan IVUS System significantly advances the field of intracoronary imaging. We are eager to bring the system to the William Beaumont hospital, where we are already successfully employing the LipiScan NIR system and gleaning key insights from the chemogram information it provides. The inclusion of plaque structure data via LipiScan IVUS further elevates the system’s practical clinical utility for characterizing coronary lesions and identifying lipid core plaque. This information can better inform technique and treatment decisions for my patients today, and, in the future, holds the promise to help prevent heart attacks and sudden death.” Dr. Goldstein has been involved in vulnerable plaque-related research for more than 10 years, and currently serves as a consultant to InfraReDx as well as other medical device and imaging technology companies.

David Rizik, M.D., medical director of Invasive Cardiology at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center, commented, “Patients are increasingly presenting to the cath lab with complex lesions, such as left main disease, multi-vessel disease and bifurcation lesions. In these patients, angioplasty guided by angiography alone is inadequate to prevent potential complications such as restenosis, stent thrombosis, and peri-procedural myocardial infarction.” He continued, “To address these challenging cases, we have already incorporated the use of the original LipiScan system to help us identify lipid core plaques that complicate stenting. We are excited to acquire the next-generation LipiScan IVUS, as the addition of IVUS technology to the LipiScan platform will transform this novel diagnostic tool into a truly indispensible component of our lab.”

Each year, more than 2 million individuals worldwide undergo coronary stenting. While clinical results of stenting procedures have steadily improved, approximately 30% of individuals undergoing stenting experience a significant adverse event such as peri-stenting myocardial infarction, post-procedure complications from the stented site, or new coronary events at non-stented sites. In most cases, stenting is guided primarily by X-ray angiography, which does not reveal the health of the vessel wall. Increasingly, physicians are recognizing the limitations of relying on angiography alone and are turning to advanced imaging solution systems to optimize stenting strategy.

About InfraReDx, Inc.
InfraReDx, Inc. is a privately funded medical device company improving patient care through the development and commercialization of intelligent imaging technologies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. InfraReDx’s LipiScan IVUS Coronary Imaging System is the first and only available catheter to combine both near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) technologies to both visualize and characterize the vulnerable intracoronary lipid core plaque (LCP) suspected of causing the majority of heart attacks. Founded in 1998, InfraReDx is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts. For more information, visit www.infraredx.com.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–U-Systems, the leader in automated breast ultrasound, today announced that it has received approval to market the somo·v™ Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) system as an adjunct to mammography for screening asymptomatic women for breast cancer in the European Union.

Approval was based on extensive clinical evidence and includes the following indication: “The intended use of the somo·v ABUS system is to provide a significant increase in breast cancer detection and sensitivity of Interpreting Physicians in diagnosing symptomatic and screening asymptomatic women as an adjunct to mammography.”

“We are excited that the somo·v ABUS now has CE mark approval for breast cancer screening. The somo·v ABUS is the first and only approved automated ultrasound system for screening asymptomatic women,” said Ron Ho, president and CEO of U-Systems. “This represents a major advancement in breast health for women as study after study, have demonstrated a need for additional tools to improve the early detection of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breast tissue which impacts detection and carries an increased risk of breast cancer.”

“The somo·v ABUS is not intended as a replacement for mammography, which remains the most effective screening tool for many women. However, we have strong scientific evidence that for women with dense breast tissue, supplementing mammograms with somo·v ABUS can substantially increase breast cancer detection,” added Ho.

“The sensitivity of screening mammography is limited in women with dense breasts, as low as 30-50%,” said László Tabár, M.D., F.A.C.R. (Hon) Professor of Radiology, Uppsala University School of Medicine, and Medical Director at the Department of Mammography Falun Central Hospital, Falun, Sweden. “It is essential to have a multimodality screening approach for detecting breast cancer at an early stage, to prevent women from dying from this disease. The somo·v Automated Breast Ultrasound system fulfills this important need in the multimodality approach.”

U-Systems is currently sponsoring the SOMO·INSIGHT Clinical Study, the largest clinical research study ever undertaken by an ultrasound company. The study is designed to evaluate whether digital mammography in combination with the somo·v Automated Breast Ultrasound system is more sensitive than a routine screening mammogram alone in detecting breast cancer in women with greater than fifty percent dense breast tissue. To date, more than 9,000 women have participated in the study which is actively recruiting up to 20,000 women at multiple breast imaging centers in the United States. The SOMO·INSIGHT Clinical Study has identified a significant number of mammographically negative breast cancers that would not have been detected had the participants not had an ABUS exam. Systems, Inc. (OTCBB:VKNG – News) announced today that it has received clearance of its 510(k) application by the Food and Drug Administration related to its Next Generation 3DHD visualization system. The System is scheduled for market launch in Washington D.C. at this year’s American College of Surgeons’ Annual Clinical Congress which will be held from October 3-7.

Jed Kennedy, Viking President & CEO said, “We are very pleased to have received timely FDA 510(k) clearance of our Next Gen system for a broad base of minimally invasive procedures including general surgery, urology, gynecology, spinal, bariatric, ENT and thoracic.” Kennedy went on to say, “With the 510(k) in place, we will now focus on completing the documentation required to apply the CE mark to the 3DHD system.” The CE mark demonstrates compliance with the European community’s Medical Device Directive.

Kennedy continued, “Because Viking is ISO13485-certified, we will be able to self certify the 3DHD for the European community. This keeps us on track to be in the US and European markets in the fourth quarter of 2010 as planned.”

Nearly all minimally invasive procedures are currently performed with a 2D camera. The Company plans to provide surgeons with high quality 3D vision in a cost effective and flexible format which has the potential to not only improve the quality of care but also to reduce procedure time and therefore cost of procedures.

Viking’s Next Generation 3DHD system provides surgeons from a broad base of surgical specialties with the ability to perform complex minimally invasive surgery with a revolutionary vision system that restores their natural depth perception previously sacrificed with 2D systems. Viking Systems’ 3DHD system is planned to offer surgeons the choice of two different proprietary 3D optical systems. The Company also plans to offer a 2DHD camera for use with the system for surgeons that may prefer this modality for less complex cases. Jed Kennedy elaborated, “The 3DHD system will offer hospital administrators a flexible solution, intended to provide a vision system solution for the visualization needs of minimally invasive surgeons.”

In October 2009, at the American College of Surgeons’ Annual Clinical Congress in Chicago, Viking Systems first publicly demonstrated the Next Generation 3DHD camera system utilizing a prototype Sony 3DHD flat panel display. Since this initial demonstration, Viking Systems and Sony have collaborated on presentations at a series of Surgical Congresses and meetings to expose surgical thought leaders in targeted specialties to the 3DHD system prior to its official launch in October 2010.

Most recently, cardio thoracic surgeons attending the 5th International Symposium on Hybrid Approach to Congenital Heart Disease in Columbus, Ohio, had the opportunity to gain some hands on experience with the 3DHD system. Jed Kennedy reported, “Once again, surgeons were ‘blown away’ by the quality of the image the Viking 3DHD vision system provides and with its natural depth perception. Obviously, when performing minimally invasive thoracic surgery the surgeons want all the help they can get. We believe 3D visualization will significantly help to accelerate the conversion of open thoracic surgery procedures to a minimally invasive approach.”

Viking Systems intends to begin production of this unique Next Generation system and currently plans to begin deliveries of systems for the US and European markets in the fourth quarter of 2010. Viking Systems believes that at launch its high quality 3DHD visualization system will be the only cost effective, standalone 3DHD solution available for minimally invasive surgery.

About Viking Systems, Inc.
Viking Systems, Inc. (OTCBB:VKNG – News) is a leading worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of 2D and 3D visualization solutions for complex minimally invasive surgery. The Company partners with medical device companies and healthcare facilities to provide surgeons with proprietary visualization systems enabling minimally invasive surgical procedures, which reduce patient trauma and recovery time.
